2007 Prescription: More Bed and Breakfast Getaways to Reduce Stress and Extend Life; Study Finds Skipping Vacations Can Be Dangerous to Your Health

A study of 1,500 women, led by Catherine McCarty of the Marshfield Clinic in Marshfield, Wis. found that women who take frequent vacations sleep better, are more satisfied in marriage, and are less likely to be tense or depressed. In an interview Wednesday, Dr. McCarty stated, "We found that women who take a vacation only once per year, in comparison with women who take a vacation twice or more per year, are 40% more likely to report high levels of tension. In this same study, we found that tension and anxiety are inversely correlated with bad lipid values (higher triglycerides and total cholesterol, etc.)."

Researcher Elaine Eaker of the State University of New York at Oswego reports that women who don't take frequent vacations have eight times the chance of dying of heart disease or suffering a heart attack than those who take vacations often.

The same goes for men. A study of 12,338 middle-aged men found that those who did not take annual vacations were more likely to die than those who did in a nine-year longitudinal study reviewed at the State University of New York. Brooks Gump one of the study's co-authors said, "We concluded that skipping vacations could actually be dangerous to your health."
