How to Avoid Foreign Travel Disasters: Humor Author Diana Estill Shares Her Advice
Dallas, TX (PRWeb) March 28, 2007 -- Having been pick-pocketed and left penniless in Germany, forced to navigate in the "wrong" lane on Grand Cayman Island, and separated from luggage that toured Europe without her, humorist Diana Estill, author of Driving on the Wrong Side of the Road: Humorous Views on Love, Lust, & Lawn Care (Brown Books Publishing), knows how easily foreign travel can turn troublesome. In her latest book she shares a few of these Chevy Chase-like misadventures with hilarity. Ms. Estill offers the following tips for taming overseas vacation stress:
- Allow extra time when departing for the airport, just in case you have to double back to retrieve a forgotten item--like a passport (or venture miles out of the way, as she did while in the Yucatan, to find a working ATM).
- Plan to arrive at your final flight destination long before dusk if you will be driving to other locations.
- Obtain maps and directions from the Internet or local travel bureaus before leaving home. Don't try to rely solely on rental car agency maps unless you are good at deciphering foreign terms and folding origami.
- Consider traveling with a compass unless you're the rare type who can instinctively locate "north" while journeying in circles.
- Never depend on vendors to provide you with accurate customs information unless you have a deep desire to see the dark recesses of places such as Miami International Airport.
Ms. Estill has been a journalist and humor columnist for 10 years. Her work has appeared online, in magazines, and in major newspapers, including The Washington Post, The Miami Herald, and The Dallas Morning News. She has been a guest on WFAA, Good Morning Texas, New England Cable News, Good Morning New England, and other television and radio broadcasts. The author lives with her husband in Murphy, TX.
