Travel Agency Sends Blacks Back to Roots

Washington, DC (PRWeb) December 6, 2006 -- Many students share the goal of one day traveling to Africa, while several have begun tracing their genealogy. Howard Alumnus James White is making dreams like this come true everyday with Roots Recovered Travel, which is an online travel agency. White gives tours to anyone all over the world, but specializes in customized tours to Africa.

"My tours concentrate mainly on Africa, but we need to see the whole world," White says.

He gives tours to anyone, but targets mainly Blacks who he believes should have more of an interest in visiting Africa and tracing their roots. Roots Recovered Travel offers affordable tours all over Africa including Gambia, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Egypt, South Africa, Ethiopia, Mali, Cote D'Ivoire, Togo, Benin, Morocco and Senegal. Travelers also have the opportunity to enroll to become an online travel agent and further benefit with discounted trips.

White says he was inspired to create Roots Recovered Travel, which is an African-American travel agency, after he released his book "Roots Recovered." The book is a how to guide for tracing African and West Indian roots back to Africa. The book also gives information about how to travel to Africa at inexpensive prices and how to trace African roots by using various genealogy methods and DNA technology. Before writing "Roots Recovered," White visited Africa and noted people looked at him as if he was crazy for visiting.

"I then wrote "Roots Recovered" to help encourage others to go to Africa and to trace their roots," he said. "We need to be more flexible in what we do."

Many Howard students like the idea and commend White for what he is trying to do with the Black community to help find a way to visit their ancestral home Africa.

Junior public relations major Lindsey Woods, who had never heard of the site before, was excited to hear about such an opportunity.

"I feel like this is a really good idea and I think that everyone should look into this," Woods said. "It's not everyday African-Americans get the chance and opportunity to trace their roots and visit Africa."

Jasmine Gosset, a junior public relations major said, "This is an awesome opportunity that is being offered. As African-Americans, the traces of our original roots have been somehow lost. This is a great way to reconnect with our ancestors."

Sophomore finance major Joel Alexis, who recently heard about the Roots Recovered Travel site said it's a very interesting venture.

"I think that this might inspire a movement," Alexis said. "One much like the Marcus Garvey's Back to Africa movement."

Though Roots Recovered Travel appeals to many students who have school tuition and other expenses to worry about, many have to wonder just how much a tour to Africa would cost.

"Everything is flexible," White says when it comes to tour expenses and deals. "I can custom tailor any tour to Africa that you want. All I need to know is where you want to go and when."
